Dr.
As a young boy, John Baumrucker’s
desire was to become a fireman, but his mother, Janet said he was to
become a doctor and there was never any doubt about his career choice
from that time forward. He attended Northwestern University from 1962-
1966 and the University of Cincinnati School of Medicine from 1966-
1970. In the winter of 1969, while on winter break from school and
spending time with his father in Cashiers, John visited the
Highlands-Cashiers Hospital. While there he was asked to come to open
a practice when he graduated. He said he would come if they could get
him out of the draft, as he had already been drafted and was to report
to duty after completion of his internship. Knowing this was
impossible without an act of congress, Dr. John felt he would be in
Viet Nam or some other exotic place in 1971; however, President Nixon
signed a bill exempting small town and underserved inner city doctors
from the draft only three days before he was to be inducted. He
started his practice in August 1971 and has been here ever since.
Being in a small town didn’t stop him from being interested in
academic ventures. It was during his early days with the hospital that
Dr. Baumrucker wrote a paper on the side effects and drug interactions
that was subsequently published in the New England Journal of
Medicine. He also was the first to report cough as a side effect of
ACE inhibitors, which is now known to be the most common side effect
of the drug.
During his thirty-nine years with
Highlands-Cashiers Hospital Dr. Baumrucker has spent thousands of
hours as the Emergency Room physician. “The size of our hospital
enables our ER team to respond more quickly to critical care patients
and allows me, as a physician, to devote more time to those patients.”
One of Dr. Baumrucker’s more memorable experiences was a patient
admitted to the ER, having had a heart attack. Thought to be
stabilized, the patient experienced twelve cardiac arrests over the
next few hours. “After his 13th cardiac arrest, I prayed,
asking God to help this man, a blind, gentle and kind person”, said
Baumrucker. “I’m pleased to report that he had no more cardiac arrests
and eventually recovered and lived almost twenty more years”
When not attending to patients at
the hospital Dr. Baumrucker likes to spend his leisure time fishing,
working in his garden, volunteering for mission work in Bolivia and
wishing he more time to play tennis.
