Richard Matthews was born in
Pensacola, Florida and was raised on the water. He enjoyed sailing,
water skiing, fishing and boating. He also liked to play tennis, golf,
basketball and all outdoor activities. Richard excelled in science and
decided at 12 years of age that he wanted to be a physician. He
received a full scholarship to attend Eckerd College and in 1975,
after attaining his BS in Chemistry, Matthews worked as a
chemist for 3 years before attending medical school at the University
of Florida. In 1982 he earned his MD and has been Board Certified and
is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. For the next
24 years Dr. Matthews practiced Family Medicine in Gulf Breeze and
Pensacola, Florida.
In 2006 Dr. Matthews visited
Highlands with his family. “We fell in love with the area,” he said.
“We found the small–town feel that we had lost in Gulf Breeze.” Just 3
years later Matthews was excited to accept an offer to join the team
at Highlands-Cashiers Hospital; opening his Family Practice in June
2009. “Given the fact that ours is a small hospital, we are very
fortunate to have the-state-of-the-art equipment often found at much
larger facilities,” said Matthews. “Together with the commitment and
friendliness of the doctors and staff, we have a unique combination of
services more than able to serve the community of Highlands.”
In his spare time Dr. Matthews values family as his priority, but
enjoys “just about any” outdoor activity including fishing, hiking,
tennis, golf, canoeing and gardening.
