However after his first year at Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Stewart made a decision that his career path lay in the medical field. “I realized that I wanted more than just science,” said Stewart, “To me, medicine was the art of science, working with people.” Graduating from Emory University, Atlanta with a BS in Biology in 1972, Stewart went on to achieve his MD from Tulane Medical School, New Orleans in 1976.

From 1979 Dr. Stewart spent the next 26 years in private practice, in Gainesville, Georgia. In 2005 he was presented with the opportunity to move to the small town of San Luis Obispo, California, where he subsequently worked in group practice. Several years later however, and wanting to be closer to family members in north Georgia, Dr. Stewart and his wife made a decision to leave California. In 2010 Dr. Stewart was given the opportunity to join Highlands-Cashiers hospital. “This was not only a great opportunity to join a first class hospital, but also to be closer to family,” said Stewart. “We love western North Carolina and have vacationed there many times. We are now excited about joining the community and are looking forward to spending more time with our family.”

In his free time Dr. Stewart likes to hike and travel. His other interests are the Civil War and military history.
